The Arewa Youths Initiative for Energy Reforms (AYIFER) has urged the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mallam Mele Kyari, to ensure the Kaduna refinery is rehabilitated to world-class standards and not modeled after the Port Harcourt refinery.
In a statement signed on Friday by the group’s National Coordinator, Alhaji Bashir Al’Amin, and General Secretary, Engr. Gideon Yakubu, AYIFER called for a modern, fully functional petrochemical refinery akin to the Dangote refinery in Lagos. They described the Port Harcourt refinery, which has faced significant criticism from stakeholders and host communities, as a “blending plant” and urged Kyari to avoid a similar outcome for Kaduna.
Highlighting the Kaduna refinery’s significance to the North, the group noted that it remains one of the region’s last economic legacies, following the collapse of major industries like the groundnut pyramids and textile factories in Kano and Kaduna. They emphasized the refinery’s potential to revitalize the region’s economy and provide jobs for its youth.
“We urge Mallam Mele Kyari to expedite actions on the Kaduna refinery to bring the North on par with other regions. This refinery is a legacy project, and all our hopes are tied to its successful rehabilitation,” the statement read.
While expressing faith in Kyari’s expertise, the group cautioned him against any pressures that could lead to substandard delivery. They also acknowledged their failed attempts to meet with him directly, citing his busy schedule, and called for continued prayers and support for his success.
“Since the extinction of several industries in the North, the Kaduna refinery remains a beacon of hope. We trust Almighty Allah to guide Mallam Kyari to deliver it well and on time,” the group stated.
