The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has filed a Notice of Appeal against the Court of Appeal judgment on the hijab dispute involving the International School, University of Ibadan (ISI), while also seeking a stay of execution to halt enforcement of the ruling pending the determination of the appeal.
In a statement issued on Friday by the General Secretary of the group, Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, MURIC expressed concern over a public notice by the ISI management directing that, from Monday, July 6, 2026, female students would no longer be allowed to wear the hijab with the school uniform.
The organisation said the directive was based on the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on Friday but argued that the legal process had not been exhausted.
According to the statement, the Incorporated Trustees of MURIC filed and served a Notice of Appeal as well as a Motion for Stay of Execution/Injunction Pending Appeal on the same day the judgment was delivered.
MURIC maintained that the filing of the appeal and the accompanying application meant the legal dispute remained before the courts, making it inappropriate for the school to immediately enforce the judgment.
“It would be inappropriate and prejudicial for the school management to hurriedly implement the judgment by enforcing a ban on the use of the hijab before the court has had the opportunity to determine the pending Motion for Stay of Execution/Injunction,” the statement said.
The group urged the management of the International School, University of Ibadan to exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions that could render the pending application ineffective or heighten tension within the school community.
MURIC reiterated its commitment to the rule of law, saying the protection of fundamental rights and peaceful coexistence could only be guaranteed through due process and respect for judicial proceedings.
The organisation also appealed to Muslim parents, students, guardians and the wider Muslim community to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while the legal process continues.
It expressed confidence that the courts would give all parties a fair hearing in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
MURIC further assured Muslim parents and the public that it would continue to pursue the matter through all lawful legal channels until a final judicial determination is reached.
