As Muslims across Nigeria mark the Eid El Adha festival, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for sober reflection on the nation’s most pressing challenges, particularly the rising insecurity and worsening food crisis affecting millions of Nigerians.
In a message signed by the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union extended warm greetings to all Nigerians celebrating the festival and emphasized the need for both gratitude and introspection during this season.
The statement read “Eid El Adha is a time for reflection, gratitude, and community,As we come together to celebrate, we must not forget the growing concerns surrounding food insecurity and the persistent threats of insecurity across many regions of the country.”
While acknowledging the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in steering various developmental initiatives aimed at strengthening democracy and improving citizens’ welfare, the NUJ noted that the resurgence of terrorism, banditry, and the nation’s epileptic power supply continue to hamper economic and agricultural growth.
“The intersection of insecurity and power supply challenges has severely hindered agricultural production and access to food resources. Adequate food supply is not just a human right; it is also a pillar of national peace and security,” the union stated.
The NUJ urged the Federal Government to reevaluate its current strategies, stressing the need for actionable and sustainable solutions that prioritize the plight of the marginalized and empower farmers to boost productivity.
“As journalists, we are committed to amplifying the voices of the voiceless and supporting initiatives that bring about lasting change,” Comrade Abdullahi said.
The union also called on Nigerians to show compassion and unity by remembering those affected by conflict and hunger during the festive period.
“Together, we can work toward a more secure, equitable, and prosperous Nigeria,” the NUJ concluded.
