The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of a senior journalist, Elder Gabriel Gwajime, who died on Monday, February 10, 2025, in Abuja after a brief illness. He was 60 years old.
Until his demise, Gwajime was a respected media professional, worked with the Citizens Watch Advocacy Initiative (CWAI). He had also held various editorial positions in several Nigerian mainstream newspapers and was a Board member of the Guild of Civil Societies and Media Executives for Equity, Justice, and Transparency in Nigeria (GOCMEJ).
The NUJ FCT Council in a statement signed by the NUJ FCT Council Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle,described the deceased as a dedicated journalist known for his integrity, in-depth reporting, and commitment to giving a voice to the voiceless, even in the face of intimidation. His work in journalism and civil society significantly contributed to media development and the promotion of equity and justice.
“His loss is deeply felt not only within the NUJ FCT Council but across the journalism community. He was a mentor to many, a friend to all, and his contributions to the profession will not be forgotten,” the statement read.
The late Gwajime, who hailed from Onyian in Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, is survived by five children and several grandchildren.
The NUJ FCT Council extended its condolences to his family and friends, praying for strength to bear the loss and for his soul to rest in peace. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
