The FCT Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video alleging that terrorists are advancing on the nation’s capital, with heavy gunfire reportedly ongoing within the city.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, had been alerted to the circulation of the video, which she described as deliberately fabricated to incite panic among residents.
According to the statement, there is no record of any terrorist attack or security breach in Abuja or anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory. Preliminary findings by the FCT Police Command indicate that the gunshots heard in the footage were digitally manipulated and sourced from unrelated material.
“The video shows an unidentified location with buildings under construction and bears no verifiable link to Abuja,” the statement noted.
The Commissioner of Police has consequently ordered a comprehensive forensic analysis to trace the origin of the video and ensure that those responsible for its creation and dissemination are identified and brought to justice.
The Command cautioned content creators and social media users against spreading unverified information capable of causing fear and public disorder, warning that offenders would face prosecution under existing laws.
Residents were urged to disregard the video and rely only on credible and official sources of information, as authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining security and public confidence across the FCT.
