Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State is reportedly seeking an urgent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu amid growing political tension following a wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The latest defection came on Tuesday, when Hon. Maharazu Salisu, the PDP lawmaker representing Maradun II Constituency in the State House of Assembly, formally joined the APC. His exit added to the mounting pressure on Governor Lawal, coming barely a week after another PDP candidate allegedly backed by the governor with over ₦4 billion during a bye-election also defected to the ruling APC, citing poor governance and dissatisfaction among the populace.
The political landscape in Zamfara has shifted significantly, with the APC now controlling 13 out of 24 Assembly seats. Reports indicated that at least seven more lawmakers are preparing to defect, a move that could leave the PDP with only four members and potentially open the door for impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Sources close to Government House, Gusau, disclosed that Governor Lawal convened a meeting with some members of the Assembly on Monday, where he reportedly expressed concern over his political future. During the discussion, he was said to have admitted fears of losing his re-election bid and hinted at having “international options,” referencing personal investments and properties in London, Dubai, the United States, and Germany.
Governor Lawal’s administration has faced growing criticism over alleged poor governance, insecurity, and dwindling party unity. His planned meeting with President Tinubu is expected to focus on political reconciliation efforts and possible strategies to stabilize his administration and prevent further defections.
