Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has launched the Back-to-Farm Initiative to enhance food production across the state’s three senatorial districts.
Speaking at the Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement in Ovia South West Local Government Area, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reviving agriculture, empowering farmers, and ensuring food security for Edo residents and beyond.
He emphasized that the initiative would not remain a mere policy but would be fully implemented to yield tangible results. “I want to thank our farmers who have been dedicated to agriculture. This time, we will farm together. Our goal is to produce enough food not just for Edo State, but for the entire country,” he said.
The governor assured farmers of government support through incentives such as fertilizers, farm machinery for mechanized farming, and access to loans to facilitate their agricultural activities.
“This is the season to farm, and my administration will provide the necessary equipment, fertilizers, and resources to help farmers succeed,” Okpebholo added.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Osagie Aibuedefe, disclosed that the state government has increased the agricultural budget to over N70 billion. He assured farmers that the funds would be used to provide necessary support and improve food production.
In his remarks, the Vice President of the Farmers Association, Mr. Benson Enahikare, who read the association president’s speech, highlighted some of the challenges farmers face, particularly the encroachment of cattle that destroy crops.
The Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement, established in 1963, spans 2,300 hectares and is expected to play a key role in Edo State’s renewed agricultural drive.
