Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has pledged to restore peace and stability to the troubled Okpella Community in Etsako East Local Government Area, following recent violence linked to a kingship dispute.
Speaking during a meeting with Okpella leaders, titleholders, and political representatives at the New Festival Hall in Government House, Benin City, Governor Okpebholo expressed deep concern over the unrest and assured swift action to address the community’s grievances.
“I felt very bad when I heard about the killings in the area. To me, it is not acceptable. We will address the issues quickly and ensure peace is restored,” the Governor said.
He emphasized the critical role of traditional kingmakers in deciding leadership and criticized any unilateral imposition of a king on the community.
The dispute centers on the appointment of Lukman Akemokue as Okuokpellagbe of Okpella by the previous administration, which community leaders claim was imposed without adherence to traditional processes.
High Chief Hanson Aimofumhe, speaking on behalf of the Okpella Council of Village Heads and Chiefs, accused former Governor Godwin Obaseki of using the vacant stool to reward a political ally. He called on Governor Okpebholo to nullify the appointment to restore harmony in the community.
“Godwin Obaseki saw the vacant Okuokpellagbe stool as an opportunity to compensate a political ally. This action has brought disunity to Okpella,” Aimofumhe alleged.
Governor Okpebholo underscored the economic importance of peace in Okpella, home to rich mineral deposits and two major cement companies. He stressed the need for stability to foster business growth and community development.
“We must ensure Okpella remains a safe ground. Businesses need absolute peace to operate, and we will work with stakeholders to resolve the kingship issue quickly,” the Governor stated.
Governor Okpebholo announced plans to reconvene with Okpella’s traditional kingmakers and community leaders to gather comprehensive details and chart a path forward.
Hon. Anamero Dekeri, member representing Etsako East Federal Constituency, congratulated the Governor on his election victory and lauded his commitment to peace and development.
The meeting was attended by top government officials, including Deputy Governor Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Secretary to the State Government Barr. Musa Ikhilor, and Chief of Staff Gani Audu.
Governor Okpebholo assured residents that his administration would work tirelessly to restore peace and unity, making Okpella a model community in Edo State.
