The House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise has pledged its continued support for the Tincan Island Port Command following its remarkable revenue performance in the first quarter of 2025.
During a recent oversight visit to the Command, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, disclosed that the Command generated a total of ₦347,935,672,475.50 between January and March 2025. This reflected a significant increase from the ₦303,791,379,473.67 recorded in the same period of 2024, amounting to a revenue growth of ₦44,144,293,001.83, or 14.54%.
Comptroller Onyeka noted that the Q1 revenue represents 91.2% of the Command’s quarterly revenue target of ₦381.1 billion, and 22.81% of its annual target of ₦1.52 trillion. He attributed the success to improved operational strategies, a firm stance against revenue leakages, and the dedication of officers and men of the Command.
In addition to revenue performance, Comptroller Onyeka briefed the lawmakers on recent anti-smuggling efforts. He revealed the seizure and handover of illicit drugs to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), including 1,863 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 931.25 kilograms and 97 packets of Crystal Methamphetamine, with a total street value of over ₦8 billion.
“These seizures underscore our unwavering commitment to national security and the fight against illegal activities,” he said.
Highlighting stakeholder engagement, Onyeka emphasized the Command’s collaboration with Customs licensed agents, shipping companies, security agencies, and civil society organizations. He said such synergy has been instrumental in enhancing port security, trade facilitation, and overall efficiency.
On capacity building, he added that several training programs were organized in the first quarter to equip officers with skills in integrity, emotional intelligence, and inspection procedures, ensuring compliance with international standards.
Looking ahead, Comptroller Onyeka assured the visiting lawmakers that the Command remains committed to surpassing its revenue targets and strengthening operational capacity in the remaining quarters of the year.
He also appreciated the support of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, and the Management Team for providing strategic direction and fostering a conducive environment for growth.
In his remarks, Chairman of the House Committee, Rt. Hon. Leke Abejide, lauded the Command for its professionalism and revenue achievements. He pledged the Committee’s continued support and assured that any bill concerning the Nigeria Customs Service will receive prompt attention in the National Assembly.
