The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has condemned the expulsion of Channels Television journalists from the Akwa Ibom State Government House, describing the action as a direct assault on press freedom and democratic values.
The affected crew a correspondent and a cameraman were reportedly expelled following a broadcast on Channels TV, which featured a video clip of Governor Umo Eno allegedly confirmed plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement jointly signed by IPI Legal Adviser and Chairman of the Advocacy Committee, Tobi Soniyi, and the Committee Secretary, Ochiaka Ugwu, the institute demanded the immediate recall of the journalists, emphasizing that no media professional should be punished for doing their job.
“The state government’s reckless action is an alarming development. These journalists are experienced media personnel with deep knowledge of government activities, and no journalist should face such humiliating treatment,” the statement read.
IPI Nigeria said the expulsion violated the 1999 Constitution, particularly Section 22 of Chapter 2, which guarantees freedom of expression and the media’s responsibility to hold government accountable.
“It is especially distressing that Governor Umo Eno, widely regarded as a media-friendly leader, could resort to such an unacceptable and anti-democratic move. We remind him that independent journalism and press freedom are essential to the sustenance of democracy,” the statement added.
IPI Nigeria called on the governor to reverse the expulsion without delay and prevent further embarrassment to his administration.
