Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has thrown his weight behind the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its recent delineation of electoral wards in Warri Federal Constituency.
Speaking on Arise News’ “Morning Show” on Sunday, Aniagwu described the exercise as a long-overdue correction of historical injustice and imbalance, particularly against the Ijaw and Urhobo communities by their Itsekiri counterparts.
He emphasized that the protests trailing the development, particularly from the Itsekiri ethnic group, were unjustifiable, noting that Warri Federal Constituency belongs equally to the Ijaw, Urhobo, and Itsekiri peoples.
“The Supreme Court had earlier ruled in favour of restructuring the electoral boundaries to foster fairness, equity, and proper representation. INEC’s action is simply in compliance with this ruling and based on internal findings that revealed significant disparities,” Aniagwu stated.
He explained that Warri South, Warri South-West, and Warri North, which make up the constituency, have witnessed tensions stemming from ethnic dominance and perceived marginalization.
“The reforms may appear uncomfortable to those who had enjoyed the advantages of the old system, but it is a necessary step towards justice and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
Aniagwu urged the Itsekiri community to accept the changes in good faith and join hands with others in building a more equitable political landscape for the region.
“It’s human to resist change, especially when it affects one’s privileges. But true peace can only be built on the foundation of fairness,” he added.
