The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on Nigerian authorities to either arraign former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in court or release him immediately, condemned what it described as prolonged detention by security agencies.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, and signed by its Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, the group expressed concern over El-Rufai’s continued custody following his interaction with anti-corruption agencies.
According to the statement, El-Rufai voluntarily reported to the Abuja office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16, 2026, and was released two days later before being taken into custody the same day by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
MURIC argued that the former governor’s absence in court proceedings on Wednesday could not be attributed to him, noting that a detainee does not control his movement while in custody. The organisation alleged that there appeared to be attempts to keep him detained indefinitely without due judicial process.
The group maintained that Nigerian law permits a suspect to be held for only a limited period before being presented before a competent court, stressed the constitutional principle that individuals remain innocent until proven guilty.
“MURIC demands the immediate arraignment of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in a court of competent jurisdiction or his release,” the statement said, adding that security agencies do not possess the authority to determine guilt outside the judicial process.
The organisation also urged the Federal Government to uphold democratic principles, including respect for the rule of law, freedom of movement, and freedom of expression as guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.
MURIC further warned against what it described as negative political perceptions arising from the detention of prominent opposition figures, urged authorities to ensure transparency and adherence to legal procedures.
The group concluded by reiterating its demand: “It is time to arraign El-Rufai or set him free.”
