Following the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State, which claimed the lives of over 73 people, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the strengthening of Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) across all State Police Commands. The explosion, which occurred on January 18, 2025, after a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire, also resulted in numerous injuries and widespread property destruction.
In his response to the tragedy, the IGP conveyed his deepest condolences to the government and people of Niger State. He emphasized the need for improved enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent such catastrophic incidents.
“The loss of over 73 lives in this tragic incident is a stark reminder of the critical need for road safety and strict adherence to regulations. We must not allow negligence to cost lives,” said the IGP. “I have directed all State Commissioners of Police to work closely with other traffic management agencies to enhance enforcement of safety protocols on our roads.”
Egbetokun also urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, warned that failure to comply with traffic rules could result in further tragedies.
“I pray for the souls of the departed and call on all stakeholders, including transport operators and the general public, to prioritize safety in their operations, ensuring that such disasters are not repeated,” he added.
