Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has died at the age of 52 after a prolonged illness.
A family source confirmed the death to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon, stating that the lawmaker passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India where he had been receiving medical care.
The source described Akwashiki’s death as a major loss to Nasarawa State, noting that his leadership style and commitment to constituency development left a lasting legacy.
“Since the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Akwashiki was the best senator the zone ever produced due to his purposeful leadership. His projects are in every nook and cranny of the constituency, and he remains the only senator from the zone to win a second term,” the source said.
Before his election into the Senate in 2019, Akwashiki served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he was Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, the late senator was elected in the 2019 general elections and re-elected in 2023.
His death has sparked widespread grief across Nasarawa State, with political leaders, associates and constituents paying tribute to his contributions to governance and development.
