In a renewed effort to deepen national consciousness and promote Nigeria’s core symbols and values, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has donated 5,000 copies of the reintroduced national anthem, Nigerian flags, and a National Values Charter plaque to the National Sports Commission.
The Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by the Director of Special Duties and State Operations, Mr. David Akoji, said the gesture is aimed at addressing recurring instances where athletes struggle to correctly recite the national anthem at international events.
He described sports as a powerful and unifying platform that transcends ethnic, religious, and political differences, often rallying citizens around a common goal and fostering national pride.
Presenting the National Values Charter, Mr. Akoji explained that the document serves as a vital social contract between the government and its citizens. It highlights the Nigerian Promise, Citizens’ Code, and institutional policies that guide responsible conduct and civic responsibility.
Receiving the materials, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, applauded the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. He noted that sports not only unite Nigerians but also contribute significantly to economic development and job creation.
He further revealed that the donated materials will be distributed during the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final, where the Nigerian Falcons will face Morocco, to inspire patriotism and proper rendition of the national anthem.
The NOA delegation, led by Mr. David Akoji, included several senior officials: Director of Communication and Media, Mallam Bala Musa; Director of Civic, Values and Democracy Education, Dr. Olukemi Afolayan; Director of Youth Engagement and Inclusion, Mrs. Blessings Oyem; Director of Legal Services, Mr. Dogo Williams; and Director of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Mr. Emeka Egbugara.
