The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has cautioned Nigerians against the misuse of United States visas, urged citizens to strictly adhere to the stated purpose and classification of their visas.
In a statement signed by Bala Musa, Director of Communication and Media, the NOA Director-General, Mallam Lanre Onilu, said visa compliance is essential not only for individual travelers but also for preserving Nigeria’s international reputation.
Onilu stated that obtaining a U.S. visa is not the end of security checks, as American authorities continue to monitor the activities of visa holders. He warned that any violation of immigration rules or U.S. laws could result in visa revocation, deportation, or even a lifetime ban.
“Overstaying your visa or engaging in activities outside the visa’s permitted scope can have serious consequences,” the NOA DG said. “Your action is harming the chances for other Nigerians with genuine reasons to visit the U.S.”
He further urged Nigerian travelers to declare all excess cash at entry points and avoid carrying items classified as contraband. He reminded students studying in the U.S. to ensure timely regularization of their visa status.
Onilu also noted that U.S. consular officers are likely to deny tourist visa applications if it is discovered that the purpose of travel is to give birth in the U.S. in order to obtain citizenship for the child.
The NOA reiterated that while the United States encouraged lawful travel, it maintained strict screening procedures to uphold security and ensure a transparent visa process.
