The National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has applauded the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for their joint efforts in tackling the menace of illicit drugs and contraband in Nigeria.
Ribadu gave the commendation on Monday, June 3, 2025, while hosting the leadership of the three agencies at his office in Abuja. The meeting followed a landmark inter-agency operation that resulted in the seizure and destruction of 206 containers and a trailer-load of unwholesome pharmaceuticals and narcotics.
He also noted the successful conclusion of an investigation involving 50 containers under scrutiny, describing the feat as a model of synergy in safeguarding national security and public health.
“This is an acknowledgment of the good work you’ve been doing,” Ribadu said. “Nigeria is changing. It won’t be business as usual anymore. We will go after the criminals who bring these poisons into our country.”
Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, revealed that the Service had earlier declared a state of emergency on the trafficking of illicit pharmaceuticals. He credited the swift and effective response to the strong collaboration between agencies, bolstered by the support of the NSA.
“We are stronger together. And we will remain vigilant to ensure these substances never make it into the wrong hands.” the CGC said.
Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that the operation aligns with Nigeria’s National Action Plan against drug abuse and illegal pharmaceutical imports. She disclosed that over 1,300 security personnel had been deployed under the NSA’s directive to support joint field operations across the country.
“These unregistered and unwholesome products are a danger to our women and children,Our continued collaboration with Customs and NDLEA is saving lives.”she said.
Also speaking, NDLEA representative, Shadrac Haruna, acknowledged the impact of the inter-agency committee initiated by the Customs Comptroller-General, which he said had played a vital role in disrupting drug distribution networks and shutting down illegal warehouses.
As a mark of appreciation, the NSA presented plaques and letters of commendation to the heads of the three agencies. Ribadu was also presented with a Certificate of Destruction for the seized substances an act symbolizing Nigeria’s deepening resolve to eradicate drug abuse and safeguard public health.
