The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran journalist and former Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, Madam Stella Okoh Esene.
In an official statement signed by the Council’s Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the NUJ FCT Council described the news of her death as a “monumental loss” to the journalism profession and a painful blow to the union, especially women in media across the Federal Capital Territory.
Madam Esene died on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a prolonged illness. She was 64 years old.
The Council noted that until her passing, she was actively involved in journalism, having retired from the Federal Ministry of Information and taken up a role with True Verdict Online Newspaper. A native of Ubiaja in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, she was widely respected for her commitment to ethical journalism and women’s empowerment in the profession.
“NUJ FCT Council is deeply pained by this loss. She was a pillar of strength and inspiration to many journalists, particularly the younger generation. Her leadership, courage, and commitment to the ideals of truth and fairness in journalism remain exemplary,” the statement read.
During her tenure as NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, the Council said Madam Esene distinguished herself with uncommon passion, professionalism, and advocacy for gender equity and ethical standards in media practice.
The NUJ FCT Council also highlighted her role as a mentor and advocate whose impact will be felt for years to come, particularly among women journalists who looked up to her as a trailblazer.
“Her death comes at a time when her experience and wisdom are most needed in the ongoing efforts to strengthen professionalism and inclusivity in the Nigerian media landscape,” the Council lamented.
The NUJ FCT Council extended its heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, and the entire NAWOJ FCT Chapter, prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and for God to grant her loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
