The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council is set to host a symposium on disability-inclusive journalism, themed “Breaking Barriers, Amplifying Voices: Inclusive Journalism,” on October 6, 2025, at the NUJ Secretariat in Utako, Abuja.
The event aimed to promote inclusive journalism practices and highlight the role of the media in dismantling stereotypes and amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria’s democratic and developmental process.
The symposium will feature technical sessions on disability rights, media advocacy, and social protection, led by experts from CARE, CISLAC, and Heirs Life Assurance. Additionally, there will be an interactive session with journalists with disabilities sharing their personal journeys, showcasing the union’s commitment to fostering an inclusive media space.
In line with the Disability (Prohibition) Act of 2018, the event will also include the launch of the Reserved Park Signage Initiative for the National Assembly and media organizations. This initiative underscores the commitment to creating accessible environments for PWDs.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba, has reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to provide safe, accessible, and disability-friendly environments for PWDs across the country. The NUJ FCT Council has pledged to collaborate with the Presidency in promoting disability inclusion and advocating for the rights of PWDs ¹ ².
The event mark a significant step towards promoting inclusive journalism and supporting persons with disabilities in the media industry.
