The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has partnered with Premium Times to promote ethical journalism, enhance press freedom, and improve the welfare of journalists.
The collaboration was announced during a courtesy visit by NUJ FCT executives to Premium Times headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday. The visit aimed to explore areas of mutual interest, including capacity building, media ethics, and better working conditions for journalists.
Speaking during the meeting, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, said the union remained committed to safeguarding journalists’ rights and ensuring they operate in a conducive environment.
“Our primary focus is to protect journalists’ welfare, advocate for press freedom, and provide continuous training to help media professionals excel,” Ike stated.
She praised Premium Times for its credibility and commitment to investigative journalism, added that partnerships with reputable media organizations are crucial to strengthening the industry.
In response, Mr. Musikilu Mojeed, Premium Times’ Editor-in-Chief, welcomed the collaboration, stressed the need for high ethical standards in journalism.
“We align with NUJ’s mission to improve training and professionalism in the media sector. Many journalists come from different academic backgrounds, and it is essential to equip them with proper knowledge of media ethics and best practices,” Mojeed said.
He also highlighted the importance of journalists’ welfare, calling for improved access to health insurance, life assurance, and pension schemes for media practitioners.
Both parties discussed possible joint initiatives, including training workshops, public forums, and investigative reporting collaborations.
The NUJ delegation, which included Vice Chairman Yahaya Ndambabo, Secretary Jide Oyekunle, and Treasurer Sandra Udeike, received copies of Mojeed’s latest book and Premium Times’ annual banking report.
The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs, symbolized the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at fostering responsible journalism and protecting press freedom in Nigeria.
