The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria (CIPEN) to strengthen data protection compliance and promote privacy best practices within Nigeria’s power sector.
The agreement was signed at the NDPC headquarters in Abuja as part of efforts to institutionalise collaboration between both organisations in implementing the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, said the Commission’s mandate is broad and cannot be achieved without strategic partnerships. He explained that the Commission is leveraging a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to drive effective implementation of the NDP Act across critical sectors of the economy.
Olatunji noted that the collaboration with CIPEN had already commenced through the training of the institute’s members by the Commission, adding that the formal partnership would create mutual benefits while deepening data protection compliance in the power sector.
According to him, the MoU will enhance stakeholders’ capacity to safeguard personal data, strengthen regulatory compliance, and promote a culture of privacy and accountability among professionals in the industry.
In his remarks, the President of CIPEN, Engr. Israel Abraham, welcomed the signing of the agreement, describing it as a milestone that would foster stronger collaboration between the two organisations.
He expressed confidence that the partnership would be effectively implemented to advance data protection practices in Nigeria’s power sector, noting that the MoU marks the beginning of a more strategic and impactful relationship between CIPEN and the NDPC.
The partnership is expected to support capacity building, professional training, and increased awareness of data protection obligations among power engineers, in line with the country’s commitment to safeguarding personal data and strengthening digital trust.
