Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, is set for a new phase of strategic growth following a unanimous resolution by stakeholders to work in unity for the institution’s development. This decision was the outcome of a four-day Council-Management Retreat held in Ede, Osun State, from May 28 to May 31, 2025.
The retreat, themed “Towards A Better Working Relationship Between Council and Management,” brought together key figures from the university’s leadership, academic unions, and alumni. Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, delivered the keynote address, setting the tone for deep reflection on OAU’s 63-year journey.
Participants included the Pro-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso; OAU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Adebayo Bamire; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. O.M.A. Daramola; and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. M. Olubola Babalola. Also in attendance were Prof. Akanni Akinyemi (DVC, Research, Innovation and Development), and other principal officers such as the Registrar, Librarian, and Bursar.
Prominent alumni presence was led by the newly elected Global President of the Great Ife Alumni Association, Barrister Leye Bunmi Falode, who was sworn in on May 24.
In his goodwill message, Falode unveiled a 14-point alumni agenda with a strong emphasis on supporting the university beyond the dwindling federal allocation. He emphasized the need for a collaborative and rancour-free environment to achieve shared goals.
Various stakeholders including representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Congress of University Academics (CONUA), and the Students’ Union Government also participated in the retreat, offering insights into both challenges and emerging opportunities for the university.
The retreat closed with a renewed commitment to strengthen communication, accountability, and stakeholder involvement in order to reposition OAU as a globally competitive centre of academic excellence.
