The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that partnership with Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) will boost the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Chief Tony Ojukwu who stated this when he received a delegation of JDPC in Abuja led by Reverend Father Solomon Uko noted that though the Commission has been partnering with other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), it will still extend such partnership to JDPC given its broad network across the nation to further spread the message of human rights.
According to the top human rights advocate, the JDPC and other religious institutions have the potential to support the NHRC with formidable structures which the Commission could leverage on as a means of improving human rights promotion and protection.
“By our law and strategic work plan, we don’t claim that we can do the work of human rights alone. We need to collaborate with religious institutions and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to realise our mandate”, he stated.
He said that religious bodies are in every village and the NHRC is in every state therefore we will scale up our partnership with them to cover more grounds in human rights protection.
Earlier, the Executive Director of JDPC, Reverend Father Solomon Uko told the Executive Secretary that his organisation is currently running a programme that addresses the issue of human trafficking, which he noted is targeted at restoring human dignity.
The Catholic Cleric informed the Executive Secretary that the programme which has been on for about one year is being executed by the JDPC in conjunction with a cluster of NGOs with the support of USAID.
