Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist and media icon, Chief Ben Adaji, describing him as a hero of democracy and a shining example of journalistic excellence.
Adaji, a renowned journalist and former Chairman of the Taraba State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), died on Saturday at the age of 67. He reportedly passed away around 4 p.m. at his country home in Abo-Ojikpadala, Imane District, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications, Emmanuel Bello, Governor Kefas described the late journalist as a forthright and courageous professional who remained committed to the ethics and principles of journalism throughout his distinguished career.
The governor noted that Adaji played a significant role in promoting free speech and accountability through fearless reporting and unwavering professionalism. He said the deceased journalist’s contributions to the media industry and democratic development would remain indelible.
“Chief Ben Adaji was a courageous journalist who stood firmly for truth and justice. His dedication to ethical reporting and his commitment to mentoring younger journalists earned him widespread respect across the profession,” Kefas stated.
The governor recalled Adaji’s numerous confrontations with authorities during Nigeria’s military era, describing his steadfast defence of press freedom as a testament to his dedication to democracy and public service.
Until his death, Adaji served as the Taraba State Correspondent of Aljazira Nigeria Newspaper. During his career spanning several decades, he worked with notable media organisations including PM News, Tempo, TheNEWS Magazine, The Nation Newspaper, and National Trial.
Beyond journalism, Adaji was also a respected traditional leader, holding the title of Abujah of Oda Ojiji Imane in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State. His tenure was widely acknowledged for promoting cultural heritage, peace, and community development.
Governor Kefas described the loss as a painful one not only for the Adaji family but also for the media community in Taraba State and Nigeria at large.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the NUJ, colleagues, friends, and the people of Kogi and Taraba states, prayed for the peaceful repose of the late journalist’s soul.
The veteran journalist left behind a legacy of integrity, professionalism, courage, and service to both journalism and community development.
