It was with deep sorrow that the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, Brig Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim DSS PhD MTRCN, Management and Staff of the Scheme received the shocking news of the transition of Maj Gen EA Akpan rtd. on Saturday, 16th May, 2020.
Gen Akpan was the 4th Chief Executive of the Service Corps who sat in the saddle of leadership from 1984 to 1988. He was a consummate administrator who repositioned the Scheme on the path of growth during his tenure as National Director — the nomenclature of the headship of the NYSC until 16th June, 1993.
His achievements include:
Institution of the NYSC Flag and Anthem which have subsisted till this day;
Institution of the Annual Sports Festival;
Establishment of NYSC Farms across the country, which revolutionised Community Development Service, among so many other accomplishments.
His transition coming in quick succession with that of the 6th Chief Executive of the Corps, Late Maj Gen Hafiz Momoh rtd, has left the NYSC Family highly traumatised.
Our heart goes out to the family, the Government and people of Akwa-Ibom State and the Nigerian Army who have lost an icon, a great patriot and mobiliser of men and women for community development.
We are however consoled by the fact that he lived a worthy life, touching so many people and institutions which is the hallmark of a purposeful life and shall outlive him, speaking eloquently in his favour in so many years ahead.
He shall sorely be missed by the Scheme which related with him until his transition to eternal glory.
May God forgive his sins and grant his soul everlasting peace and bliss.
