Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Makinde made the declaration during a well-attended political rally jointly organised by the APM and PDP at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Addressing thousands of supporters and party faithful, the governor said his decision to join the presidential race was driven by the need to reposition Nigeria and strengthen democratic governance across the country.
He expressed concern over the current state of the nation’s economy, security and political environment, which he said had continued to decline under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Makinde stressed the importance of preserving Nigeria’s multi-party democracy, warning against any attempt to undermine democratic plurality or concentrate political power within a single party structure.
According to him, Nigeria’s diversity and democratic history make it imperative for political leaders to promote inclusiveness, accountability and responsible governance.
The rally drew large crowds from across the South-West region, including supporters from Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Lagos states, many of whom openly expressed support for the governor’s presidential aspiration ahead of the 2027 elections.
