The Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim has said the scheme remitted a sum of Five Hundred and Eleven Million(N511,000,000) into the federation Account this year.
Brigader Ibrahim also revealed that the NYSC generated over N280 million into the federation Account in 2020.
The NYSC DG disclosed this on Friday while briefing Newsmen in Abuja.
Ibrahim also revealed that orientation for Batch C stream 2 of the scheme will commence on Wednesday in all the camps across the country.
The NYSC Director General lauded the role of corps members in the just concluded Anambra governorship election.
He emphasized that corps members have potentials and appealed to Nigerians to tap their potentials “so that they will continue to do more for the country”.
“Last year we generated over N280 million, for 2021, we generated N511million which we also paid into the federation account and this is our contribution to the national economy”.
He explained that “when I took over I said we must put on our thinking caps, we will not continue like a beggar agency depending on the government hundred percent for funds.
“And that was why we introduced so many things, one, we rejigged our garment factory, rejigged table water, bakery factory and so we generated money.
“I can assure you corps members with their talents are now acting films, they are also into national cultural troupe and they are going to perform and from there we are going to generate revenue.
“We are determined to tap the potentials of corps members from this, we want the support of all Nigerians to take care of our corps members, feel concern for their welfare and tap their potentials, once we tap their potentials it will reduce their movement.
“You can see what they did in Anambra, they came out and played a very important role for the successful governorship election in Anambra, I was there with them, we went round the polling units to see what they were doing and they were highly commended by INEC and Nigerians, so corps members are potentials and am appealing to Nigerians to tap their potentials so that they will continue to do more” Ibrahim added
