The leadership structure of terrorist groups operating in Nigeria’s North-East has suffered another major setback as two senior commanders surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI, providing intelligence expected to strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
The two commanders, identified as Munzirs within the terrorist leadership hierarchy, surrendered to troops of Sector 2 in Geidam, Yobe State, on July 4, 2026. They were subsequently moved to Maiduguri, arrived at about 7:30 p.m. on July 5, where they are currently in military custody undergoing profiling, debriefing and intelligence exploitation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, said preliminary interrogation showed that the surrendered commanders occupied influential positions within the terrorist organisation and possessed extensive knowledge of its operational activities, command structure and logistics network.
According to him, intelligence already obtained from the debriefing has provided valuable insights into the group’s operational methods, sustainment mechanisms and support networks, which will significantly enhance ongoing intelligence-led operations aimed at locating, disrupting and dismantling remaining terrorist enclaves across the North-East theatre.
Captain Goni described the surrender as another significant setback for the terrorist group, noting that it further validated the effectiveness of sustained offensive operations being conducted by troops of Operation HADIN KAI in conjunction with other security partners.
He explained that the relentless military pressure, supported by coordinated land and air operations and enhanced intelligence efforts, has continued to deny terrorists freedom of movement, degrade their combat capability and weaken their command and control structures.
The military noted that the sustained offensive has increasingly forced terrorist leaders and fighters to abandon the insurgency and surrender to troops as continued resistance becomes increasingly untenable.
Operation HADIN KAI said the latest development reflected the growing disintegration of the terrorist organisation and underscores the cumulative impact of sustained military operations across the theatre.
The military reaffirmed its determination to maintain the current operational momentum until all terrorist elements are either neutralised or compelled to surrender, stressing that troops would continue to exploit actionable intelligence, intensify offensive operations and work closely with relevant stakeholders to restore lasting peace, security and stability across the North-East.
