The Nigeria Talent Exploration Challenge, a national initiative aimed at discovering, nurturing, and showcasing the exceptional skills of Nigerian youths in technical and vocational fields, was officially launched in Abuja today. The program, which evolved from the Katsina National Talent Hunt Challenge, was initiated by Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Katsina State, who now serve as Chairman of TETFund.
This initiative is open to Nigerian youths of all ages, creating opportunities for young talents to showcase their creativity and skills. A panel of prominent Nigerians will assess the participants, and winners will be declared and rewarded after the competition.
The project is in collaboration with National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) l,working to align the challenge with global technical and vocational education standards.
Speaking at the launch, Faisal Jaafar Rafindadi, Project Coordinator of the Nigeria Talent Exploration Challenge, emphasized that the initiative aligned with the Federal Government’s vision for economic growth through technical and vocational education. He highlighted the importance of innovation, creativity, and hands-on skills in preparing young Nigerians for leadership, entrepreneurship, and employment in the modern economy.
In his address,Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari reflected on the journey of the initiative, stressing its role in harnessing and developing youth potential. He explained that the program is not just about short-term recognition, but about building a sustainable framework for national growth, unity, and economic advancement. He called for strong collaboration between the government, private sector, and educational institutions to ensure long-term success.
Also in his remarks,the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, commended Masari’s vision and emphasized the significance of skill-based education. He noted that Nigeria is now actively involved in the World Skills International Competition, often referred to as the “Olympics of Skills,” and expressed optimism that winners from this challenge will represent Nigeria at upcoming global events such as the West African Skills Competition in Zambia (2025) and the World Skills International in Korea (2026).
Malam Jelani Aliyu, Chief Mentor of the project, shared his personal journey, emphasizing the value of skills over certificates. He recounted how General Motors (GM), the world’s largest automaker at the time, recruited him not based on university certificates, but on his exceptional design talent and creativity. He urged Nigerian youths to focus on developing practical skills that create value rather than relying solely on academic qualifications.
The event also featured goodwill messages from invited guests, university dons, and other key stakeholders, all expressed support for the initiative and its potential to transform Nigeria’s technical and vocational education sector.
A major highlight of the event was the official unveiling of the initiative’s logo by Alhaji Dr. Usman Ngakupa, Emir of Garki, symbolizing the program’s commitment to empowering young Nigerians through skills development and innovation.
With strong backing from government agencies, NBTE, and private sector partners, the Nigeria Talent Exploration Challenge is poised to revolutionize the country’s technical and vocational education landscape, providing a platform for young Nigerians to compete, excel, and gain national and international recognition.
