A delegation of eminent Nigerians from across the country, operating under the umbrella of Patriots, has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately begin the process of constituting a new Constitution for the country.
The group, led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth made the call after meeting with President Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, on Friday, August 9.
It blamed the prevailing dislocations noticed in Nigeria’s nationhood on the military 1999 Constitution.
Chief Anyaoku and his team briefed State House Correspondents on their proposal. The delegation stressed the importance of a new constitution, noting that the existing document has contributed to the nation’s ongoing woes.
Among the notable figures of the delegation were Senator Shehu Sani, renowned lawyer Mike Ozekhome, former Minister of Information Labaran Maku, Senator Ben Obi, and former Ogun State governor Chief Segun Osoba.
The group called on President Tinubu to send a presidential bill to the National Assembly, proposing the establishment of a constituent assembly.
This assembly according to the group, would be charged with the responsibility of drafting a new constitution that will reflects the diverse nature of Nigeria.
The proposed draft, it said would then be subjected to a national referendum, allowing the people to have a direct input in its adoption.
The Patriots group stressed that this new constitution could be completed within nine months and is crucial to overcoming the systemic issues currently plaguing the country.
