The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s criminal justice system through stronger collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Judiciary.
Disu made the call during a courtesy visit to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, on Thursday, July 2, 2026, where both institutions explored ways to deepen cooperation in advancing the administration of criminal justice and the rule of law.
The IGP commended the Judiciary for its commitment to judicial integrity, constitutional governance and justice delivery, describing the Police and the Judiciary as indispensable partners in the nation’s criminal justice system.
He stressed that closer collaboration was essential to improve the quality of criminal investigations, strengthen prosecution support and ensure the timely dispensation of justice.
Disu also underscored the importance of the effective implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and corresponding state laws, noting that their full enforcement would reduce delays in criminal proceedings and enhance the efficiency of the justice system.
Highlighting ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force, the IGP said the Force was investing in forensic science, intelligence-led policing, digital investigation capabilities and other modern policing tools to improve crime detection and prosecution.
He added that greater cooperation with the Judiciary in deploying technology and expanding capacity-building programmes would further strengthen criminal justice delivery.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Judiciary and other critical stakeholders to uphold the rule of law, improve public confidence in the justice system and build a safer, more secure society.
