The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to personnel welfare and infrastructure development with the commissioning of key projects in the Lagos area.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Vice Admiral Abbas said the projects formed part of activities marking the Nigerian Navy Week and the 70th anniversary of the Service.
The projects commissioned include the Dolphin Golf Club House, a block of 48-room accommodation for junior ratings, and newly completed 16 units of two-bedroom flats, all located within Navy Town, Lagos.
According to the naval chief, the projects reflected the Navy’s steady transformation into a modern maritime force while underscoring its commitment to improving personnel welfare, strengthening support infrastructure and creating an enabling environment for personnel and their families.
Vice Admiral Abbas noted that the commissioning was particularly significant because it demonstrated the Navy’s resolve to complete abandoned projects across the Service and put them to productive use.
He disclosed that the 48-room accommodation block had remained abandoned for over five years before the current leadership revived and completed it.
“We will continue to prioritise the completion of viable abandoned projects, so that personnel can derive the intended benefits of investments made on their behalf,” he said.
The CNS added that officers, ratings and civilian staff should expect the commissioning of more previously abandoned projects as the Navy sustains the policy.
On the Dolphin Golf Club House, Vice Admiral Abbas described the facility as an important investment in the social and recreational infrastructure of the Nigerian Navy.
He said beyond serving as a sporting facility, the clubhouse would promote professional interaction, strengthen friendship among personnel and encourage greater engagement with veterans, partners and members of the wider naval community.
While celebrating the achievements, the naval chief stressed that infrastructure development does not end with project completion, urging beneficiaries and custodians of the facilities to embrace a strong maintenance culture.
He also called on personnel to adopt prudent electricity consumption habits and avoid wasteful use of energy resources.
Vice Admiral Abbas expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support towards the growth and modernisation of the Nigerian Navy.
He further commended the project implementation teams, contractors, engineers and workers for their dedication and professionalism in ensuring the successful completion of the projects.
The Chief of the Naval Staff expressed confidence that the facilities would contribute significantly to institutional development and enhance the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Navy in the years ahead.
