The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel accused of breaching national security, including alleged involvement in a mutiny aimed at overthrowing the government.
The development followed an earlier statement issued by the DHQ on January 26, 2026, addressing concerns related to the matter. The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, confirmed the inauguration, describing it as a critical step toward reinforcing discipline, accountability, and the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and constitutional order.
According to him, proceedings of the court martial will be conducted with strict adherence to due process, fairness, and impartiality, assuring that all cases would be handled within the framework of existing military laws to guarantee justice without bias.
“The Armed Forces remain resolute in upholding professionalism, discipline, and the rule of law,” he stated, added that the rights of all accused personnel would be respected, including their entitlement to a fair hearing.
The trial is expected to draw significant attention as it underscored ongoing efforts by the military to maintain internal discipline and safeguard national stability.
