The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s unwavering commitment to legislative oversight, described it as the fundamental pillar of democratic governance. Speaking at the 7th Annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and the 75th posthumous birthday celebration of the late Oyo State governor, held at the University of Ibadan on Monday, Senator Jibrin emphasized that oversight ensures accountability, transparency, and checks and balances in government.
The roundtable, organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation (SAAF) in partnership with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan, was centered around the theme “Legislative Oversight in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects.” Senator Jibrin stated that legislative oversight is essential for ensuring the effective use of public funds and holding the executive accountable to the people.
“The role of legislative oversight in a democratic society cannot be overemphasized because it is the bedrock of democratic governance,” Senator Jibrin said, stressing that it enables the legislature to investigate government activities, evaluate policies, and ensure the proper allocation of public funds.
The Deputy Senate President, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, assured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly remains fully committed to its oversight responsibilities, while encouraging constructive criticism of its activities.
Senator Jibrin also commended the SAAF for upholding the legacy of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi through the annual roundtable, noted that the theme of this year’s event was particularly timely, offering an opportunity to reflect on the critical role of the legislature in shaping Nigeria’s future.
In response to questions, the Deputy Senate President clarified the reasoning behind naming the National Assembly Library after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He explained that it was a historic decision, as Tinubu, a former senator, is the first ex-senator to be elected president of Nigeria.
On the matter of the nation’s refineries, Senator Jibrin assured that the National Assembly had been closely overseeing the operations of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. He highlighted the successful resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery and the imminent reopening of the Warri Refinery, expressing confidence in the progress made.
Addressing the ongoing power supply challenges, Senator Jibrin acknowledged that while power has been a longstanding issue, the present administration has developed strategies to tackle the crisis and stimulate economic growth. He emphasized that the government remains committed to improving the country’s power infrastructure.
The roundtable provided a platform for key stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue on the importance of legislative oversight in promoting good governance and national development.
