Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has been arrested and detained by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) barely an hour after he regained his freedom Thursday night from the dungeon of the Department of State Services (DSS).
It was learnt that Emefiele is currently being interrogated at the National Headquarters of the anti-graft agency in Abuja over alleged abuse of office during his tenure as the head of the apex bank.
The EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, is yet to issue an official statement on the development.
Emefiele, it could be recalled, had been in the custody of the Department of State Services since June after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from office.
He was later arraigned on July 25 on a two-count charge over “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Lagos and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.
The two-count charge was later struck out on August 17 after it was withdrawn by the Federal Government and a fresh 20-count charge instituted against him bordering on an alleged procurement fraud, among others.
Meanwhile, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation on September 22 and Olayemi Cardoso appointed as the substantive CBN Governor. Read more.
