As Muslims across the country prepare for the sacred celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, the Abuja Muslim Forum has passionately appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), His Excellency Nyesom Wike, to suspend the planned disruption of water supply during the festive period.
In a heartfelt statement signed by the Ameer of the Forum, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Ajani, the group urged the FCT Administration to reconsider the timing of the water maintenance exercise, citing the vital role water play during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration especially for religious, hygienic, and domestic purposes.
“We commend the Honourable Minister, Mr. Project himself, for his outstanding strides in infrastructural development across the FCT. However, we are deeply concerned that the planned water supply interruption, coming at a time of heightened religious activity and need, could lead to severe discomfort and even public health risks,” the statement read.
Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, involved the slaughtering of rams and other livestock, purification rituals, and communal gatherings all of which demand increased water usage. The Forum warned that limiting access to water at such a crucial time could create conditions ripe for disease outbreaks and general hardship for residents, especially Muslims observing the rites.
While applauding the government’s effort to upgrade essential infrastructure such as the water dam, the Forum stressed that the timing should be reconsidered in favour of public welfare.
“The upgrade is commendable, but its execution during one of the most important Islamic holidays may lead to avoidable consequences. We strongly suggest that the exercise be deferred until after the celebration, when the demand for water would have normalized,” Alhaji Ajani added.
The Forum expressed hope that the FCT Minister renowned for his responsiveness and people-centered approach would heed the call and help ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling Eid for Muslim residents of the capital city.
