The Niger State Governor, His Excellency Mohammed Umaru Bago, has proposed that all vice-chairmanship positions in the forthcoming local government elections be exclusively reserved for women, as part of efforts to promote gender inclusion in governance.
The governor made this proposal in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Print Media, Mrs. Aisha Wakaso, in Minna. He emphasized that women have been sidelined for too long despite their significant contributions to society and development.
Governor Bago, who has consistently advocated for gender inclusivity, stressed that empowering women at the local government level would not only promote fairness but also drive sustainable progress across the state. He highlighted that women possess the leadership skills and strategic mindset necessary for effective governance and nation-building.
“This is not about fulfilling a quota; it is about recognizing the strength, resilience, and intelligence of our women,” the governor stated. “When included in governance, women bring balance, innovation, and a unique perspective that is crucial for development.”
He urged stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and across the state to support the initiative, noting that inclusive governance is essential for long-term growth. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to breaking barriers for women in leadership and ensuring they play an active role in decision-making at all levels.
Governor Bago’s proposal is expected to generate discussions among political stakeholders as the state prepares for the local government elections.
