The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately desist from unauthorised social media activities that could undermine the integrity, professionalism and public image of the Force.
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, following growing concerns over the increasing trend of police officers creating and publishing videos, conducting live broadcasts and engaging in other social media activities while in uniform or in situations that clearly identify them as members of the Force without official approval.
According to the statement, the IGP noted that while social media remains an important platform for communication and public engagement, its use by serving officers must strictly comply with existing laws, regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy. He stressed that personnel are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content in police uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, revealing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment or commercial purposes.
To ensure full compliance, Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders and other supervisory officers have been directed to sensitise personnel under their jurisdictions and enforce strict adherence to the directive. The IGP warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to address violations within their commands.
He further tasked the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) with intensifying monitoring of social media platforms to identify officers whose online activities fall short of the professional standards expected of members of the Force.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism and responsible public communication, while assuring citizens of its continued dedication to maintaining public trust and institutional integrity.
