Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), a civil society organisation focused on monitoring and advocating for better Hajj operations, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his directive to reduce the cost of the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.
The directive, which was conveyed through Vice President Kashim Shettima during a meeting with the leadership of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), followed the strengthening of the naira against the US dollar.one of the main factors influencing Hajj fares. IHR described the move as a timely and commendable intervention that demonstrates the President’s attentiveness to the needs of ordinary Nigerians.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Ibrahim Mohammed, the organisation said President Tinubu’s decision aligned with its earlier position that the previously announced fare of over ₦8 million was excessive and did not reflect the realities of the current foreign exchange market. The group stated that the President’s action proved his oft-repeated claim that he listens to the concerns of everyday citizens.
As part of its continued advocacy for affordability, IHR also appealed to the Federal Government to direct the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to introduce a concessionary exchange rate for Hajj pilgrims. The organisation recommended pegging the 2026 Hajj exchange rate at ₦1,000 to the US dollar. It noted that this would significantly lower the overall cost, as roughly 85 percent of Hajj expenses are transacted in US dollars.
IHR emphasised that making the Hajj more affordable through such a measure would increase participation among Nigerian Muslims and allow the country to fully utilise its allocated pilgrimage slots. It added that easing the financial burden on pilgrims would be a clear demonstration of government support for the religious obligations of its citizens.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and fairness in the administration of Hajj affairs in Nigeria, and called on all relevant agencies to implement the President’s directive with sincerity and urgency.
