JUST IN: Senate announces new Minority Leader, Chief Whip

The Nigerian Senate has named Senator Philip Tenimu Aduda (FCT), and Senator Chukwuka Utazi as the new Minority Leader, and the Senate Minority Whip respectively.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, announced the appointments, on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, while reading two separate letters signed by the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Samuel Anyanwu.

The seat of the Minority Leader became vacant following the defection of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) from the PDP.

Recall, Abaribe who was contesting the Abia state PDP governorship withdrew from the primaries scheduled on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, citing imaginary delegates list, lack of transparency as reasons for his withdrawal.

He later announced to have jettisoned running for Abia State governorship seat to seek re-election to the Senate under All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) come 2023
