The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the withdrawal of the Lagos State Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) timetable, describing the development as a result of alleged Islamophobia, dereliction of duty and poor planning.
The group made its position known in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.
MURIC had reacted after the released BECE timetable indicated that Islamic Religious Knowledge (IRK) was scheduled for Friday, July 3, from 12 noon to 2:10pm, a period the organisation said clashes with the Muslim Friday congregational prayer (Jumu’ah).
Following public criticism, the timetable was withdrawn by the authorities, with an assurance that a revised version would be released.
According to MURIC, the failure of officials to consider the Friday prayer period before releasing the timetable showed a lack of inclusivity and sensitivity towards Muslim students.
The organisation questioned the composition of the timetable committee, arguing that adequate representation of Muslims and Christians in government structures would help prevent such controversies.
MURIC further alleged that the incident reflected wider concerns over the treatment of Muslims in parts of the country, calling on the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities to ensure that examinations and official activities do not conflict with religious obligations.
The group maintained that examinations scheduled on Fridays should end before noon, just as Sunday restrictions are observed for religious reasons.
Professor Akintola added that MURIC would continue to advocate for Muslim rights through constitutional means, urging authorities to promote fairness and religious harmony.
