The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has reacted to the adjournment of the bail hearing involving former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, describing the extended delay as one that could lend credence to claims by opposition voices that the matter may be politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 23rd April, 2026, and signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the group commented on proceedings at the Kaduna State High Court, where Justice Darius Khobo adjourned El-Rufai’s bail application to the first week of June, 2026.
MURIC noted that while it respects judicial processes and the autonomy of the courts, the length of the adjournment in what it described as a bailable offence raises public concern and perceptions within political circles.
The organisation referenced the court’s position that keeping the defendant in custody was considered “in the interest of justice to ensure his availability for trial,” but argued that El-Rufai’s conduct particularly his voluntary appearances before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and his return to custody after his mother’s burial should have been taken into account.
According to the group, the former governor had consistently demonstrated cooperation with investigative authorities, including notifying the EFCC of his return to Nigeria while abroad and reporting voluntarily when required. It added that there was no history of bail violation attributed to him.
MURIC further stated that El-Rufai has remained in custody since mid-February 2026, estimating that his detention could extend beyond three months by the time the bail hearing resumes in June. It argued that, in comparison with similar corruption-related cases, the duration appeared unusually prolonged.
The organisation warned that prolonged detention in such circumstances risks reinforcing public perception of political witch-hunt, urging authorities to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be timely and fair.
Concluding its statement, MURIC called for expedited judicial proceedings, insisting that “justice delayed is justice denied,” and urged that the former governor be released pending the continuation of trial proceedings.
