The Muslim Community of Oyo State has strongly distanced itself from recent Sharia-related demands reportedly made by abductors holding victims in the state, insisting that criminals and terrorists cannot speak on behalf of Muslims or Islam.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni, and Secretary-General, Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade, the community condemned attempts by kidnappers to justify their criminal activities with religious rhetoric.
According to the group, Islam unequivocally forbids kidnapping, terrorism, extortion, and all forms of violence against innocent citizens, stressing that the actions of the abductors are contrary to the teachings and values of the faith.
The Muslim Community explained that genuine Sharia promotes justice, peace, security, and the sanctity of human life, principles that are fundamentally incompatible with the activities of criminal elements.
The organisation further reaffirmed its support for security agencies and urged law enforcement authorities to intensify efforts toward apprehending the perpetrators and securing the safe release of all victims.
Citing the Holy Qur’an, the community referenced the divine injunction on the sanctity of life, noting that taking an innocent life is akin to killing all humanity, while saving a life is equivalent to saving mankind.
The leadership also called on Muslims and residents across Oyo State to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to security agencies, and reject attempts by criminals to misrepresent Islam’s peaceful teachings.
Meanwhile, under the leadership of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland and Grand Chief Imam of Oyo State, Sheikh Al-Imam Abdul-Ganiyy Abubakar Agbotomokekere, the Muslim Community of Oyo State has announced a special prayer session for the safe and speedy return of abducted schoolchildren from Oriire Local Government Area.
The prayer gathering is scheduled to hold on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Yidi Agodi Praying Ground, Ibadan, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The community urged Muslims throughout the state to participate in the prayer session and seek divine intervention for the release of the victims.
It also commended the efforts of the Oyo State Government, the Federal Government, and security agencies in responding to the abduction, while praying for wisdom, protection, and success in the ongoing rescue operations.
Expressing concern over the plight of the abductees, particularly young children reportedly among those in captivity, the Muslim Community described their condition as heartbreaking and prayed for their safe return.
“Our hearts bleed,” the statement said, while calling on Almighty Allah to answer the prayers of the faithful and bring an end to the ordeal of the victims and their families.
