The Nigerian Navy has handed over a suspected militant collaborator to the Department of State Services (DSS) following his arrest during ongoing security operations in the Calabar waterways of Cross River State.
The suspect, identified as Ubong Clement, was arrested by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) VICTORY stationed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island in Akpabuyo Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the arrest was made as part of sustained intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling militant networks and other criminal elements operating within the maritime environment.
Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that Clement maintained regular contact with members of militant groups active in the Dayspring Island axis and was involved in activities that undermined ongoing security operations.
The Navy further disclosed that intelligence linked the suspect to a notorious militant identified as Steven Joseph, popularly known as “Juju,” who has allegedly been involved in criminal activities along the waterways.
Investigations also indicated that Clement allegedly served as a channel for disposing of goods stolen from market boats intercepted by militants. Proceeds from the sales were reportedly transferred to the militant group, providing financial and logistical support for its operations.
Following the conclusion of preliminary investigations, the suspect was formally handed over to the DSS Calabar Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Nigerian Navy said the development underscores its commitment to not only targeting militants but also dismantling the support networks that sustain criminal activities in the region.
“The handover demonstrates the Nigerian Navy’s resolve to disrupt local facilitators whose activities enable criminal groups to thrive within the maritime domain,” the statement said.
The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and targeted security actions aimed at ensuring lasting peace and security in the Calabar waterways and surrounding communities.
