The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has applauded the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for honouring Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), with the national award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
In a statement issued by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the NHRC described the award as a long-overdue recognition of Prof. Nwosu’s pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s democratic development.
Dr. Ojukwu noted that Prof. Nwosu’s leadership between 1989 and 1993 ushered in far-reaching electoral reforms, including the introduction of the Open Ballot System, popularly known as Option A4.
“His tenure will forever be remembered for the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely acknowledged as one of the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s democratic history,” the NHRC boss said.
He commended INEC for advocating the honour, describing it as a noble gesture that underscores the Commission’s commitment to preserving democratic values and honoring those who have helped shape Nigeria’s electoral process.
Dr. Ojukwu also called on the Federal Government to extend recognition to other key figures who played crucial roles during the June 12 election, including commissioners, directors, and staff of the defunct NEC who demonstrated exceptional courage and patriotism.
“Those who challenged the annulment of the June 12 election in court, such as the Director of Legal Services and his team, as well as the Director of Public Affairs and others who worked behind the scenes, should also be acknowledged and celebrated,” he added.
He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sustain efforts at immortalizing heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democracy in order to inspire future generations.
