The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Dr. Tony Ojukwu has revealed that the Sub- Committee on Accreditation (SCA) of the global re-accreditation Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) has recommended the NHRC “A status” at their just concluded meeting in Geneva.
The Paris Principles Relating to the Status of National Human Rights Institutions’ set out the minimum standards that NHRIs must meet in order to be considered credible and to operate effectively. NHRC’s are reviewed on a periodic basis every 5 years.
Dr. Ojukwu commended the Governing Council and staff of the Commission and other stakeholders for their contributions to the successful outcome of the re-accreditation as well as the government for its continued support for the Commission and human rights in general.
NHRC Boss said it was in recognition of the achievements of the Commission in the promotion and protection of Human Rights that the NHRC has been elected a number of the GANHRI Governing Bureau at the Biennal Conference of Network of African National Human Rights Institutions. He therefore congratulated the government of Nigeria for election of the Commission to the Global Governing Board of the Network and the re-accreditation of the Commission to “A Status”.
