The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, will commence its 2026 Press Week on Saturday, May 16, with a series of activities focused on responsible journalism, healthy living, and democratic accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The week-long programme, scheduled to run from May 16 to May 22, is themed: “2027 Election: Defending Nigeria’s Democracy in the Age of Disinformation.” The event is expected to bring together journalists, policymakers, civil society groups, media stakeholders, and government officials to discuss issues affecting Nigeria’s democratic process and national development.
According to a statement signed by Chairman of the Organising Committee, Obas Esiedesa, and Secretary of the Committee, Queen Kunde, the activities will begin with a medical outreach at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, where journalists and members of the public will receive free medical checks and consultations through a partnership with Nizamiye Hospital.
Other activities lined up for the week include a “Walk for Mental Health” on Monday, May 18, from Julius Berger Roundabout to the NUJ Secretariat, Utako, while a public lecture and awards ceremony will hold on Tuesday, May 19, at the Lagos/Osun Hall of Transcorp Hilton Abuja.
The organisers said the public lecture is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants, including top government officials, media executives, political leaders, and stakeholders from different sectors.
Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, is expected to chair the lecture, while former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, will serve as co-chairman. The Inspector General of Police is billed as special guest of honour.
Former member of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, is expected to deliver the keynote address.
The lecture and awards ceremony will also recognise journalists and notable Nigerians for excellence, professionalism, and contributions to national development.
Other events during the Press Week include a Secondary School Press Club Quiz Competition scheduled for Thursday, May 21, at the NUJ Secretariat, while the grand finale and jean party will hold on Friday, May 22.
Speaking ahead of the event, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, called on members and stakeholders to participate actively in all activities, describing the celebration as “a week of impact, reflection, celebration, and professional excellence.”
The Council assured participants of a memorable and engaging experience throughout the week-long celebration.
