The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has congratulated young Nigerian chess players from the Chess in Slums Initiative for their outstanding performance at the 12th Annual Chess & Community Conference in the United States, where they won multiple medals and scholarships.
In a statement signed by Gabriel Odu, Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Officer at NiDCOM, the Chairman/CEO of the Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described their achievement as a reflection of the brilliance and resilience of Nigerian youth on the global stage.
She also commended Tunde Onakoya, founder of the Chess in Slums Initiative, for his dedication to empowering underprivileged children through chess.
“These kids have proven that talent knows no boundaries. Their victory is an inspiration, and we must continue to support initiatives that nurture our youth’s potential,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating and supporting Nigerians excelling in various fields across the world, emphasizing that such achievements bring pride and recognition to the country.
The Chess in Slums Initiative, a non-profit organization founded by Onakoya, has been instrumental in introducing less privileged children to chess, fostering critical thinking, confidence, and providing life-changing opportunities.
NiDCOM encouraged other young Nigerians in the diaspora to continue striving for excellence, assuring them of the Commission’s continuous support in showcasing and celebrating their success stories globally.
