Niger council chairman beats colleague to pulp

Chairmen of Suleja local government area, Alhaji Abdullahi Shuaibu Maje and and Gurara local government area, Mr. Yussuf Wali Gwamna have exchanged blows over contentions for leadership of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state.

They were said to be vying for chairmanship of Niger ALGON with neither willing to shift grounds.

Chairman of Gurara council, which is incidentally a neighboring council to Suleja, was said to have beaten Maje to a pulp after sustaining bruises himself.

Maje who sustained bruises all over his face with his nose bleeding profusely, was rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment.

Sources at the ALGON zonal meeting, which held in Kaduna, said trouble began when one delegate from Niger was asked to represent the state in the delegation to Zaria to console the Emirate over death of the Emir of Zauzau ,Alhaji Alhaji Shehu Idris and the Chairman of Suleja introduced himself as the ALGON Chairman from the state.

Gwamna, who was visibly angered by the announcement, reportedly denied Maje was Niger ALGON chairman.

His bid to express his displeasure after the delegation was dispatched to Zaria earned the Suleja Chairman beating he never bargained for.

Sources said the squabble led to scattering of table and chairs at the venue with utensils broken.

The two chairmen were said to be dragged themselves to the floor, exchanging blows before other chairmen intervened.

Special Adviser to the Niger Governor on Political Matters, Alhaji Nma Kolo, confirmed the squabble.

He stated that the government was looking into the issue as such misbehavior will not be allowed.

Kolo stated that the chairmen had gone far by embarrassing the state in another state.
