In a show of solidarity with victims of the recent devastating flood in Mokwa and surrounding communities, the Niger State Government has announced the cancellation of Hawan Bariki, Durbar, and other elaborate Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) festivities across the state.
The directive was issued by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, following the flood disaster which claimed several lives, displaced thousands, and destroyed homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure.
A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, noted that the decision was taken as a mark of respect for those affected by the tragedy. He emphasized that this year’s Sallah celebration should be observed in a solemn and modest manner.
“The suspension of the Durbar and other public Sallah activities is to allow for a period of mourning, reflection, and prayer for the souls of the departed and those currently facing the aftermath of the flood,” the statement read.
Describing the Mokwa flood as one of the worst in decades, the government expressed deep sympathy for the victims and assured them of continued support and intervention.
Governor Bago also urged citizens to use the Sallah occasion to remember the victims in prayers and to extend charitable gestures to affected communities.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the recovery and rehabilitation of flood-hit areas across the state.
